Bills @ Chiefs AFC Championship Game Preview

Just like in 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs have delivered questionable football all year long, only to turn it on in the playoffs and look primed and ready for another Super Bowl win. They remain the best-coached and most well-prepared team for every moment they may face on the biggest stage, even if they don’t have the most talented roster top-to-bottom. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are as dangerous of a duo as you could ask for on offense, and Steve Spagnuolo and Chris Jones are as dangerous of a duo as you could ask for on defense. So far, no one has proven they can get the better of them in the playoffs, as Buffalo are very well aware of.

The Bills just about saw off the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round, benefiting greatly from a fourth-quarter from hell by Ravens tight end Mark Andrews. It was an unusual game in which Josh Allen was more of a game manager than normal. Yes, he picked up two crucial touchdowns with his legs, but, other than that, contributed just 147 total yards, instead letting his running backs do most of the heavy lifting.

Against Kansas City, fans should expect to see the fully unleashed version of Allen, who will have to be at his best to down a Chiefs defense that gave up the fourth fewest points in the regular season. Chris Jones is a force to be reckoned with at the heart of the defensive line, and Trent McDuffie remains one of the best young cornerbacks in the NFL. Still, Buffalo will fancy their chances, having ranked second in the regular season with 30.9 points per game. This rush attack, headlined by James Cook, is not something that Josh Allen has ever had before, which could be the key to helping the Bills finally get across the line against Kansas City.

Of course, when Patrick Mahomes takes to the field, everyone knows what he is capable of, and it was reassuring for Chief's fans to see Travis Kelce back to his brilliant best last week against Houston. Buffalo lost Taylor Rapp in that game and have since had cornerback Christian Benford enter concussion protocol. If neither of them can play on Sunday night, it will make life a lot harder for the Bills.

One element that has been missing for the Chiefs is their run game, producing just 50 yards on the ground last week against Houston. Buffalo will be hoping they can produce a similar result this week, although it is always dangerous to put the ball in Mahomes’ hands.

AFC Championship Game Predictions

The Bills appear to be in better form and have more ways to move the ball on offense, but it is just so hard to bet against the Chiefs in the playoffs. They are hunting the three-peat after all. Until anyone beats this team in the playoffs, I think the best thing to do is to keep backing Reid, Mahomes, Spagnuolo and Jones to get the job done.
