League Format
The NBA, National Basketball Association, is the top division of basketball in the United States where some of the best players in the world compete every season. The league consists of 30 teams and was founded back in 1946 as the BAA (Basketball Association of America). Three years later, the league changed its name to what we know today as the NBA.
The number of teams in the NBA has varied throughout the years, but currently, there are 30 teams, with 29 from the USA and 1 from Canada. The current structure of the league is 30 teams divided into two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference consists of three divisions with five teams in each division.
NBA Teams:
Eastern Conference:
- Atlantic Division: Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors
- Central Division: Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks
- Southeast Division: Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards
Western Conference:
- Western Conference, Northwest Division: Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz
- Western Conference, Pacific Division: Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings
- Western Conference, Southwest Division: Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs
The regular NBA season starts in October and runs until April. Each team plays 82 games, following a predetermined schedule where teams from the same division play each other more frequently. After the regular season, the best teams advance to the playoffs. The playoffs are played in a knockout format where the teams face each other in a best-of-seven-games series. The teams with the better win/loss ratio from the regular season will have the advantage of an extra home game.
When the playoff series are played, only two teams remain: the winners of the Western and Eastern Conference. These two teams will then compete in a final series called the NBA Finals. The winners will be crowned as the NBA champions and receive the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

NBA Draft
The NBA Draft is held every year, usually at the end of June right after the season has ended. The draft is where the franchises get their chance to pick talented college players and other international prospects. Every team gets two picks and the order of who picks first is decided by a draft lottery. All teams that didn’t qualify for the Playoffs in the previous season will be in the lottery, where the four teams with the worst league record will have the best odds (14%) of getting the first pick. The league record is used when deciding the remaining draft order, where the worst team gets the highest position, followed by the second worst team and so on until all 14 teams have got their draft order.
