NEW YORK YANKEES

The New York Yankees were established in 1901, ironically as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the present-day Orioles). The franchise ceased operations in 1903 and was purchased and moved to New York City where the team became the Highlanders. They were renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The franchise is one of the most successful in all of professional sports. No MLB team has won more American League East Division titles (19), AL pennants (40), or World Series championships (27). An amazing 44 Yankees players have been inducted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

As one of the most-watched sports teams in the world, the Yankees are often on national television on the MLB Network and on FOX Sports. Fans in the New York City area can also watch the Yankees complete schedule on the YES Network. Fans can also watch Yankees games on MLB.TV and stream games via the YES network.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

As stated previously, the Yankees have a long history of success. They have won 40 MLB league championship series, the most recent of which was in 2009. That is also the last year in which the franchise won the MLB World Series. In addition to their 19 AL East Division titles, the Yankees have also earned an MLB wild card on seven occasions (1995, 1997, 2007, 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2018).

From 1949 to 1953, the Yankees won five straight World Series titles, the longest such streak in MLB history. New York is the last team to have won consecutive World Series championships. The Yankees won three straight in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

HOME OF THE YANKEES

The Yankees played at the legendary Polo Grounds until 1923 when they began an 85-year run at the original Yankee Stadium. In 2009, they moved into their current home – Yankee Stadium. The second version of Yankee Stadium is located a block north of its predecessor and includes many of the same design elements of the original.

The new Yankee Stadium has undergone some changes and renovations since opening in 2009. Currently, the stadium seats 47,309 fans.

THE YANKEES BEST

The Yankees organization has been so successful that over 50 players with an affiliation to the club have been enshrined into the Hall of Fame. There may be no more recognizable name associated with the Yankees than Babe Ruth. He was first a pitcher when he played in Boston and developed as one of the game’s greatest home run hitters after being traded to the Yankees.

Ruth was the AL home run leader 12 different times and ended his career with the most home runs in MLB history (since broken). Ruth was the AL MVP in 1923 and won a total of seven MLB World Series titles, four with New York.

Lou Gehrig was well-known for his hitting ability and his durability. He set a record for consecutive games played (2,130, since broken). Gehrig was a seven-time All-Star and was twice the AL MVP (1927, 1936). He won the Triple Crown in 1934 and was part of six Yankees World Series championships.
