2024/25 College Football Bowl Season Schedule (TV Channels & Stream)

2024/25 College Football Bowl Season Schedule

College football bowl games are a series of postseason matchups that serve as the grand finale to the college football season. These games bring together teams from different conferences, based on their regular-season records and standings. These bowl games have often been the ultimate reward for a successful season for most teams, offering players a final opportunity to showcase their talents on the big stage and celebrate a successful season. This is obviously still the case, but with the new playoff structure expanding to 12 teams, the prestigious New Year's Six bowl games have all been elevated to playoff status, featuring the nation's top-ranked teams, who are trying to keep their seasons alive.

Bowl games are an iconic part of college football’s annual calendar, wrapping up the season with a thrilling lineup of unique and exciting clashes, as well as giving fans their final chances to see some of their favorite players before they head to the NFL. And, on the other end of the spectrum, these bowl games often give freshman players their first extended game time, giving fans a teaser of what might be to come the following year. Over the years, countless legendary college careers have been born in these bowl games. For example, just a few years ago, in 2021, a freshman Marvin Harrison Junior snagged 71 yards and 3 touchdowns on 6 receptions in the Rose Bowl, after collecting only 5 targets throughout his entire regular season.

Breaking Down the Big Bowl Games

Bowl season is packed full of fun matchups, but there are a few that stand out above the rest. These marquee clashes have become a hallmark of the season, taking it in turns to be elevated to a playoff semifinal. Now, with the expanded playoff structure, they will become annual playoff clashes. Let’s dig into each of them.

The Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl, AKA ‘The Grandaddy of Them All’, is the oldest and most iconic of the bowl games. It was first played in 1902, taking place in the beautiful Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. This game has traditionally been a platform for the champions of the Big Ten and Pac-12 Conferences, pitching two of college football's very best against each other. The football is top tier, and the celebrations are epic, with the Tournament of Roses Parade adding to the special atmosphere. This magnificent parade has been uninterrupted except during World War 2 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the most recent Rose Bowl, on the 1st of January, 2024, number one-seeded Michigan downed the number-four-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide by 27 points to 20 in overtime. An attendance of 96,371 tells you just how special this ‘grandaddy’ bowl game is.

The Sugar Bowl

Held in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Sugar Bowl is another heavyweight of the bowl season, after being established in 1935. It has a long-standing affiliation with the Southeastern Conference (the SEC), featuring the best available teams from the SEC and Big 12 Conferences.

After starting off at Tulane Stadium, this particular Bowl Game moved over to the Superdome in New Orleans, in 1975. The last edition of the great game was a fantastic semifinal clash between the Washington Huskies and Texas Longhorns, in which Washington were victorious, thanks to a 37-31 scoreline.

The Orange Bowl

The Orange Bowl is tied with the Sugar Bowl as the second oldest Bowl Games in college football history, having been played annually in Miami since 1935. Based in Florida, this is often one of the sunnier bowl games out there, and nowadays will host the champion of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) unless that team is participating in a playoff game.

The most recent Orange Bowl fixture was a one-sided beat down, in which the Number 6 ranked Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Number 4 ranked Florida State Seminoles 63-3.

The Cotton Bowl

Dating back to 1937, the Cotton Bowl has been a standout fixture in the Texas footballing calendar. It used to be played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium, but it moved to AT&T Stadium in Arlington in 2010. The teams invited to the Cotton Bowl have varied over the years, and the participating teams are now determined by the CFP Selection Committee.

The most recent fixture saw the number 9 ranked Missouri Tigers down the Number 7 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.

Structure of the Bowl Season

The 2024 college bowl season kicks off on December 14th with a series of smaller, regional matchups, giving teams an opportunity to finish the season on a high and earn some bragging rights to enjoy over the offseason. As the bowl season progresses, the featured teams get better and better, building up to the prestigious New Year’s Six bowls, featuring the top-ranked teams in the nation.

The New Year’s Six games include the four biggest bowl games detailed earlier in this article, in addition to the Peach and Fiesta Bowls. This year, with the new College Football Playoff format, these six games will consist of the four quarterfinals and the two semifinals. The Orange and Cotton Bowls are the two fixtures identified for the semifinals, taking place on the 9th and 10th of January respectively. The winners will then meet in the National Championship Game at Mercedez-Benz Stadium on January 20th.

The new playoff structure sends the top 12 seeded teams (including the highest-seeded champion from the Group of Five conferences) through to the playoffs, with the top 4 earning a bye. Throughout each stage of the playoffs, the highest-seeded team will be pitted against the lowest, until only two remain. With more teams getting to enjoy knock-out football than ever before, the chances of upsets and drama have never been higher.
