What is the Sugar Bowl Game

Ever since its establishment in 1935, the Sugar Bowl has been one of the highlights of the college football season. The great game was first hosted at Tulane Stadium, which was built on land where sugar was once crystalized, hence the name. In 1975, however, the fixture moved to its current home, the Superdome in New Orleans. The Sugar Bowl has most commonly hosted the top teams in the SEC and Big 12 Conferences, and in this 2024 season’s playoff quarterfinals, it will feature the champions of the SEC Georgia, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Georgia Bulldogs vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Game Preview

For fans of the run game, this is shaping up to be a very entertaining clash. In Notre Dame’s Jerimayah Love, Riley Leonard, and Jadarian Price, we have three of the most efficient and productive rushers in the nation, combining to produce 222.4 rushing yards per game, which is 10th most amongst FBS teams. Love is leading the way with 1,057 yards and 16 touchdowns at a whopping 7.4 yards per carry, with his stablemate Price notching a handy 6.8 yards per carry, to produce 683 yards and 7 touchdowns. Quarterback Riley Leonard has been solid enough as a passer this year, but it is his 751 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground that have made the biggest difference.

Stopping the run is clearly going to be the key for Georgia, and they should fancy their chances. They are benefitting from an extra week of rest, and they have held opponents to just 3.8 yards per carry so far this year. If they can stuff the run and make Leonard beat them with his arm, the Bulldogs should be in a great spot. If they can’t, then we should expect a high-scoring game, as the Fighting Irish’s 38.8 points per game ranks second most in the nation.

The biggest concern for Georgia is going to be the health of their starting quarterback. Carson Beck is rumored to be suffering from a season-ending injury, which puts sophomore Gunner Stockton in line for a first career start. He has completed only 37 passes throughout his entire college career, producing 354 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The one point of encouragement for Bulldogs fans, however, is that Stockton was able to get the job done in the SEC Championship game, taking over with the team trailing by 3 points to 6, and eventually leading Georgia to an overtime win.

Notre Dame are a fearsome defense for him to tackle, ranking inside the top 6 for both points and yards conceded per game, with 13.8 and 295.3 respectively. They are conceding the third-fewest passing yards per game, with 162.3, so perhaps this will be a game where Georgia look to rely on their running backs to get the job done. Nate Frazier and Trevor Etienne are both hovering around the 5 yards per carry mark, and have 17 touchdowns between them on the ground.
