MLS Season so far:
Highlights
It has been a fantastic season so far, reflecting the ever-growing success that is Major League Soccer. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are enjoying life at the top of the Eastern Conference, benefiting greatly from having their superstar on the field. Their disappointing 14th-place finish in 2023 featured just six appearances from Messi, but his 9 games already in 2024 have helped turn around the fortunes of the team. Can they complete their transition from worst to first?
Disappointment of the season
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Columbus, who has to go down as the disappointment of the MLS season so far. They entered the year with high expectations, but posting just three wins has sunk them down to 8th place in the Eastern conference as things stand. In the Western Conference, it will be the Seattle Sounders fans who are feeling particularly let down. Just three wins from 12 games for them as well has positioned them in 10th and currently out of the playoff spots.
Highest Attendance
The most heavily attended game of the season, unsurprisingly, featured the MLS’s most influential player, Lionel Messi. His Inter Miami side edged out a thrilling 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium on April 13th. Messi’s presence hasn’t only helped lift Inter Miami to the top of the conference, but it also elevates MLS on the global stage and brings in an immense amount of publicity for the league. He currently leads the assists leaderboard with 12, whilst falling 1 goal behind Suarez, Benteke and Arango who top the goals leaderboard with 12.
Preview & Predictions
When it comes to picking a favorite, it has to be Inter Miami. Not only are they sitting pretty at the top of the Eastern Conference, but they boast an embarrassment of riches on their roster, including Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. That dangerous foursome had their fair share of success together at Barcelona and will be tough to stop now that they are all back together in the US.
Over in the Western Conference, the remainder of the season looks to showcase a fascinating tussle between Real Salt Lake, Minnesota and LA Galaxy, who are separated by only 2 points. Which of them can emerge victorious and take the number one seed into the playoffs? Salt Lake have been boosted by a great start to the season for Cristian Arango, whose 11 goals are tied for the lead in the MLS and have propelled his team to the top of the West.
Don’t forget about Los Angeles FC though. They are not out of it at 18 points and have been unfortunate not to get a few extra wins under their belt. Denis Bouanga leads the league in shots and shots on target. He heads up a talented unit that could get hot and leapfrog the teams above them in the Western Conference. There is certainly lots to be excited about as the 2024 MLS season rolls on.
When is the MLS Cup Playoffs
The MLS Cup Playoffs are the culmination of the Major League Soccer season, hosting the best remaining teams as they fight to be crowned champion. The playoffs will kick off on Wednesday the 25th of October, running through until the championship game on Saturday, December 9th.
