U.S. Teams at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025
Amongst the 32 teams set to compete in the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, we will get to see three US teams battle it out on home soil. The Seattle Sounders and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are already locked into the tournament, with Los Angeles FC and Club America due to battle it out for the final remaining entry in a playoff.

Inter Miami at the FIFA Club World Cup
Inter Miami were the beneficiary of being the host nation’s additional entry, selected because of their 2024 MLS Supporter’s Shield victory. This will be their first-ever Club World Cup appearance, featuring in a truly global group made up of Al Ahly FC, FC Porto, and SE Palmeiras. Porto are currently fourth in Liga Portugal, whilst Al Ahly find themselves second in the Egyptian Premier League, and Palmeiras sit top in the Brazilian Serie A.

Inter Miami will fancy their chances in every game they play thanks to their star-studded lineup featuring Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and more, and they can take confidence from the fact they have won five of their eight games in the MLS this year, slotting them into third place in the Eastern Conference. Unlike Seattle, Inter Miami’s opponents definitely fit into the ‘beatable’ category, so it should be an intriguing tournament to watch for Miami fans.

Seattle Sounders at the FIFA Club World Cup
The Seattle Sounders have earned their spot at the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup thanks to their Concacaf Champions Cup Final victory in 2022. This was a nervy game for the Sounders, who had to fight back from 2-0 down in the first leg, before eventually winning 5-2 on aggregate. This made Seattle the first USA winner of the Concacaf in 22 years, notching them one of the four allocated berths.

The Seattle Sounders have regularly ranked inside the top 8 teams in the MLS, and are led by Jordan Morris, who has been the team’s top scorer in each of the last three seasons. At the other end of the field, the Sounders have one of MLS’s best keepers, having protected the net for 12 straight seasons.
Seattle have been placed in a tough group with two of Europe’s best teams. Paris Saint-Germain are currently a whopping 22 points clear at the top of Ligue 1, and Atletico Madrid are third in La Liga, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Botafogo meanwhile, are a much easier opponent, currently ranked 15th in Serie A, although there have only been five games of the Italian league so far.
The Sounders became the first MLS club to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022, however, they lost 1-0 to Al Ahly in the second round. They will be hoping for a better return this year, especially as they will get to play some of their games on home soil at Lumen Field, but it will be tough to emerge from a group with powerhouses such as PSG and Atletico Madrid.

Playoff for Final FIFA Club World Cup Spot
After Leon were withdrawn from the tournament due to violating the FIFA Appeal Committee’s rules on multi-club ownership, a playoff match has been scheduled between Los Angeles FC and Club América, to determine who will get the final CONCACAF entry. It is important to note that Leon have appealed their removal, so they may still have a chance to feature, but if not, one of LAFC or Club América will feature for the first time.
