D.C. UNITED
D.C. United was founded in 1994 and began play as one of the ten charter franchises of Major League Soccer in 1996. It was one of the most successful franchises in the early days of MLS. D.C. United won eight of its 13 overall titles from 1996 to 1998 under legendary head coach Bruce Arena.
The club is tied for the MLS record for most Supporters’ Shields. D.C. United was also the first club to win the Supporters’ Shield and the MLS Cup consecutively. More recently, the club not finished higher than ninth overall in MLS play in the past five seasons.
Initially, billionaire George Soros was the primary investor in the D.C. United franchise. In 2001, the team was sold to Anschutz Entertainment Group, which also owns the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo of MLS. In 2007, the club was sold to D.C. United Holdings, a group that consists of a number of investors that includes William H.C. Chang. Chang also has a stake in MLB’s San Francisco Giants.
Fans can watch DC United games on TV and stream games from a number of different platforms. National broadcasts are shown on ESPN and ESPN2. Subscribers to ESPN+ can also watch on that network. The DC United complete schedule can be watched via live stream on ESPN+ as well as a number of other network apps such as ABC and FOX. Full game replays are available 48 hours after a match on ESPN+.
HOME OF DC UNITED
RFK Stadium was the original home of the D.C. United franchise from its beginnings in 1996 all the way through the 2017 season. RFK was the old home of the NFL’s Washington franchise and initially had a seating capacity of well over 45,000 for home soccer matches.
D.C. United moved into Audi Field in 2018. The soccer-specific stadium has a seating capacity of 20,000. The naming rights are owned by the German automobile manufacturer which owns the rights through 2030.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
As mentioned, the club was one of the most prolific in MLS history early in franchise history. D.C. United has won four MLS Cups, including consecutive wins in 1996 and 1997 and then victories in 1999 and 2004.
The club has won the Supporters’ Shield for most regular season points four times (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007) and has captured the U.S. Open Cup in three seasons – 1996, 2008, and 2013.
In the early years of the franchise, D.C. United won the CONCACAF Champions League and the now-defunct Copa Interamericana both in 1998.
BEST OF DC UNITED
In 2003, the club introduced the Hall of Tradition, an honor bestowed on players, coaches, and other staff members who have been integral to the franchise’s success over the years. One of the best of all-time in MLS and D.C. United history was forward Jaime Moreno. Moreno was twice selected the team MVP (2004, 2008) and holds numerous team records including most career goals (131) and most career assists (102). In 2005, Moreno was selected as one of the MLS All-Time Best XI.
