MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES


The Memphis Grizzlies were part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada. The franchise was founded as the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995. They were one of two teams – Toronto was the other – to join the NBA that year.

Prior to the 2001-02 season, the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis becoming the city’s only major professional sports team. Memphis plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The Grizzlies are the easternmost team in the Western Conference.

HOME OF THE GRIZZLIES


Upon moving to Memphis, the Grizzlies played at Pyramid Arena in downtown Memphis. The Grizzlies moved into the FedEx Forum in 2004. The arena pays homage to the city’s musical heritage. The FedEx Forum holds a capacity crowd of 18,119 for Grizzlies’ home games.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY


The Grizzlies struggled in Vancouver never winning more than 23 games in a single season. The franchise finally experienced its first winning season in 2003-04 in Memphis. The Grizzlies lost in the first round of the playoffs to San Antonio.

Memphis has made the playoffs 10 times. They have advanced to the conference finals just once in 2012-13. The Grizzlies have yet to win a division, conference, or NBA title. The franchise’s best season came in 2012-13 when Memphis went 56-26 and finished second in the Southwest Division.

The 2007 NBA draft TV schedule witnessed the Memphis Grizzlies selecting Mike Conley Jr. with the fourth overall pick. Conley would play his first 13 seasons in Memphis and is currently the franchise’s all-time leading scorer 11,733 points. Conley is also first in assists (4,509) and steals (1,161). Conley averaged in double figures in all but his rookie season in Memphis. He was also well-known for his defense. He made the NBA All-Defensive Team in 2013. Conley has also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award three times (2014, 2016, and 2019).

Marc Gasol moved from Spain to Memphis in 2001. After playing in Spain, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2007 NBA draft. He was traded to Memphis in a deal that sent his older brother, Pau, from Memphis to Los Angeles. Gasol would play 12 seasons in Memphis. He is a three-time All-Star selection and made the All-NBA First Team in 2015. Known for his defense, Gasol was the league’ Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Gasol is second on the Grizzlies all-time scoring list (11,684) and the leader in rebounds (5,942) and blocked shots (1,135).

Zach Randolph played nine of his 19-year NBA career in Memphis. He was a two-time NBA All-Star and is third on the Grizzlies all-time scoring list (9,261). Randolph is also second in rebounds (5,612). Randolph finished his career with averages of 16.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
