REAL SALT LAKE

The Real Salt Lake franchise was founded in 2004 and began play in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer in 2005. The club has experienced some success winning the MLS Cup in 2009. Not long after in 2013, the original ownership group led by Dave Checketts decided to sell its majority stake in the franchise to minority owner Dell Loy Hansen. Hansen still owns the team to this day.

Real Salt Lake has not experienced much recent success. The club has just one top-5 finish in the Western Conference in the past five seasons. The club’s best overall finish in the past five seasons was sixth in 2019.

Fans can watch Real Salt Lake games on TV and stream games from a number of different platforms. National broadcasts are shown on ESPN and ESPN2. Subscribers to ESPN+ can also watch on that network. The Real Salt Lake complete schedule can be watched via live stream on ESPN+ as well as a number of other network apps such as ABC and FOX. Full game replays are available 48 hours after a match on ESPN+.

HOME OF REAL SALT LAKE

Real Salt Lake originally played its home matches at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the campus of the University of Utah. The franchise finally moved to its current home, Rio Tinto Stadium, in 2007. Rio Tinto Stadium is a soccer-specific venue located just outside of Salt Lake City in the suburb of Sandy, Utah. The stadium is shared with the club’s sister team, Utah Royals FC. Rio Tinto Stadium seats 20,213 for home matches.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Real Salt Lake had an impressive run of success in the late 2000s when the team finished in either second or third place in the Eastern Conference in every year but one from 2008 to 2014. Ironically, the one year they did not finish second or third – 2009 – was the one year that Real Salt Lake won the MLS Cup. The club finished fifth in the conference and eighth overall before winning the Cup.

The 2009 MLS Cup is the only major honor the club has won. Real Salt Lake was the CONCACAF Champions League runner-up in 2011, the MLS Cup runner-up in 2013, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup runner-up in 2013, and the runner-up in the Supporters’ Shield race in 2010.

BEST OF REAL SALT LAKE

Alvaro Saborio is the franchise’s all-time leading goal scorer. Saborio played for Real Salt Lake from 2010 to 2015 and scored 63 goals in 127 appearances. He was one of the main reasons why RSL had the highest-scoring offense in MLS in 2010. For his efforts, Saborio was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.

RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando is not only the franchise leader in wins, shutouts, saves, and overall appearances; he is the leader in each category in Major League Soccer history. Rimando recorded 369 appearances and had a total of 118 shutouts during his tenure (2007-19) with Real Salt Lake. Rimando was a seven-time MLS All-Star, including six straight awards from 2010 to 2015.
