TEXAS RANGERS
The Texas Rangers were established in 1961 as the Washington Senators after the original Senators franchise moved to Minnesota to become the Twins. After the 1971 season, the franchise left Washington to move to Arlington, Texas, where they became the Rangers.
During the time in Washington, the franchise averaged 90 losses per season. It wasn’t until the 1994 season that the Rangers finished first in the AL West and they did so with a 52-62 record in a strike-shortened season. That led to the franchise’s first run of success with three division titles between 1996 and 1999.
The Rangers can be watched on TV on the MLB Network, ESPN, and FOX Sports on nationally televised games. Fans in Texas can watch the Rangers full schedule on FOX Sports Southwest or they can live stream games on the FOX Sports GO app or at MLB.TV.
HOME OF THE RANGERS
When the Rangers moved to Texas, they originally played at Arlington Stadium. They moved to Globe Life Park in 1994 and will move into the new Globe Life Field in 2020. The new stadium, which features a retractable roof, is located right next to Globe Life Park. The new stadium will seat 40,300 for Rangers games.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Rangers first official division title came in 1996. Texas won the AL West again in 1998 and 1999. The franchise has won four more since 2010 -2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016 – for a total of seven division crowns. The Rangers also made the postseason as an MLB wild card in 2012.
The Rangers won back-to-back AL pennants in 2010 and 2011. Texas lost the 2010 World Series to San Francisco and the 2011 title to St. Louis. The Rangers are one of six teams that have never won a World Series.
THE RANGERS BEST
Ivan Rodriguez made his debut with the Rangers in 1991. He would go on to play 13 seasons with Texas and was named an All-Star in 11 of them. He won 13 Gold Glove Awards, including ten as a Ranger. In 1999, Rodriguez became the first catcher in the history of the game to record 30-plus home runs (35), 100-plus RBIs, and 100-plus runs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, 2017.
Toby Harrah was an infielder drafted originally by the Senators for whom he made his MLB debut in 1969. Harrah is considered one of the best fielding third basemen in MLB history. He was a four-time MLB All-Star, three with Texas.
Catcher Jim Sundberg played 12 of his 16-year MLB career with the Rangers. He was the first catcher ever to win six AL Gold Glove Awards (1976-1981). Sundberg was one of the best fielding catchers to play the game. His career fielding percentage of .993 was eight points higher than the league average during the span of his playing career. Sundberg still hold the AL record for most games (155) caught in a regular season. Sundberg was a three-time All-Star participant (1974, 1978, 1984). When he retired in 1989, Sundberg had caught more MLB games than any catcher in history except Bob Boone.
