UTAH JAZZ
The Jazz franchise was founded in 1974 in New Orleans. The Jazz were an NBA expansion team that season, but moved to Utah just five years later in 1979. The team struggled in New Orleans and again for the first few years in Utah, but things started to change in the mid-1980s.
The Jazz made their first playoff appearance in 1984. They would not miss the postseason again until 2004. The Jazz, who have yet to win an NBA title, are still one of the top teams in the Western Conference year-in and year-out.
Several Utah games each year are part of national telecasts and can be watched on ABC, ESPN, ESPN+, and TNT. Fans in Utah can watch all the regional broadcasts on AT&T Sportsnet Utah. The complete Utah Jazz schedule is available via live stream using the AT&T Sportsnet app or by visiting NBA.tv.
HOME OF THE JAZZ
A venue was the primary issue when the franchise was in New Orleans. When the team moved to Utah, they first played in the Salt Palace. In 1991, the Jazz moved into the Vivint Smart Home Arena (formerly known as the Delta Center and the Energy Solutions Arena). They have been there ever since. Vivint Smart Home Arena holds 18,306 fans for Jazz home games.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Jazz won their first division title in 1984, the same year they first qualified for the playoffs. The franchise has won nine division titles (1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2007, 2008, and 2017).
The Jazz have won just two conference championships. In 1997 and 1998, Utah won the Western Conference but was beaten in the NBA Finals by the Chicago Bulls. The Jazz have made the playoffs in 29 seasons. They are still the only NBA franchise to never record a 60-loss season.
BEST OF THE JAZZ
In the 1985 NBA draft, the Jazz selected Karl Malone with the 13th overall pick. “The Mailman” would go on to become one of the greatest power forwards in the history of the game. His 36,928 career points are No. 2 in NBA history and his 34,374 career points are first in Jazz history. He is also the franchise leader in rebounds with 14,601. Malone played 18 seasons in Utah and was a 14-time All-Star. He was selected to the All-NBA First Team in 11 straight seasons (1989-1999). Malone was the league MVP twice, winning the award in 1997 and 1999. A Hall of Famer, Malone was also a member of the 1992 “Dream Team,” the U.S. men’s Olympic team that won a gold medal in Barcelona.
John Stockton was a first-round draft pick of the Jazz in 1984 and a long-time teammate of Malone’s. He played his entire 19-year NBA career in Utah. Stockton was also a member of the “Dream Team” and was one of the game’s great point guards. He sits atop the Jazz career leaderboard in assists with 15,806 and steals with 3,265. Stockton was a 10-time NBA All-Star and led the league in assists in nine straight seasons from 1988 to 1996. He finished his career with averages of 13.1 points and 10.5 assists per game.
